China SAE ranks in-vehicle optical communication among the top 10 automotive technology trends for 2026
2026-01-21
In-vehicle optical communication is gaining importance as a key technology for the next generation of smart mobility. This is highlighted in the report “2026 Top 10 Automotive Technology Trends in China” by China SAE, which identifies on-board optical communication as a critical enabler for advanced autonomous driving and high-performance data transmission.
The study is based on broad industry participation, with contributions from 378 experts from 120 organizations. The result is a snapshot of growing consensus on which technologies will set the course for the industry in the coming years, in a context of rapidly accelerating in-vehicle connectivity requirements.
According to the report, onboard optical communication, due to its high bandwidth, low latency, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, provides essential support for highly autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, it projects that this technology will achieve its first vehicle validation in 2026, marking a turning point in its industrial adoption.
For KD, this positioning is a clear sign of China’s commitment not only to keep up with technological developments, but to lead them. At the same time, the global momentum of ADAS and software-defined architectures reinforces this trajectory, placing optical communication at the center of the debate on the future of the vehicle.
